I am sure you have heard about the legendary cookies at Levain Bakery.
If you find yourself in the Upper West Side (near 72nd St.) check it out!
There will likely be a line, but it'll go quickly.
When you get to the door, you will start smelling the wonderful scent of freshly baked cookies. :)
There are four different flavors of cookies and each is $4 dollars: chocolate chip walnut, dark chocolate chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and dark chocolate peanut butter chip.
I'm not a huge fan of chocolate, so I have only tried the chocolate chip walnut and the oatmeal raisin. If you're like me and you're not a huge fan of either walnuts of raisins, don't worry, they're not overwhelmingly full of those two flavors. You know how some cookies are full of raisins? Yeah, Levain cookies do not have what seems like a half cup of raisins per cookie.
The chocolate chip walnut cookie is their signature cookie flavor and it is wonderful. The chocolate chip walnut cookie is a little sweeter than the oatmeal raisin, probably because of the chocolate chips. So, if you're a little sweet averse, I would recommend the oatmeal raisin cookie.
My friend has tried the dark chocolate peanut butter chip cookie and has said that she really liked it, just that it's pretty peanutty. (I have also heard from others while in line that they highly recommend that flavor if you enjoy peanut butter.)
They are HUGENORMOUS. Each one weighs about 1.5 pounds, not even kidding. I can never finish them in one sitting, or even 2 or 3.
When you buy them, I recommend eating right away. The cookie is given to you in a white bag and it's still warm. At first bite, the cookie is gooey/soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside and the chocolate chips are melt-y and ooze out when you bite into the cookie. You can tell that these cookies are freshly made constantly.
The bakery is super small inside. There's just maybe two little bars to allow maybe 8 people eat in the shop.
They have other baked goodies like scones, breads, etc. and you can preorder.
They are very sweet and rich cookies, just be warned, but you will not regret it. Maybe, just make sure you bring a glass of (soy/almond)milk.
Left: Chocolate chip walnut; Right: Oatmeal Raisin
While I've been living in NYC, I made sure to get one every few months AND always brought my visitors to try the cookies.
You'll find the shop at 74th St and Amsterdam. (72nd St; 1 line) :)
There is also one in Harlem at 116 and Frederick Douglass Boulevard (116 St; B/C line)
Just get into the line! It'll go quickly, I promise. You'll meet really friendly people while waiting and probably receive some recommendations about how best to enjoy your experience.
