The views are ridiculously gorgeous and I highly recommend stopping here for a refueling stop or to stay the night!
After we finished touring the dolmen and trying to get into North Korea unsuccessfully, we decided we wanted to do a quick snack stop.
109 House is one of the most popular cafes and pensions on Ganghwa Island. It is a luxurious white and blue stucco pension and cafe. Kind of seems like they were going for the appearance of Santorini or other classic European towns. The pension seems really nice if you want to stretch your day trip into a 1 night 2 day trip. There is a beautiful swimming pool and seriously, the views are super nice and it is across the street from some of the more popular docks with companies that offer sightseeing and fishing tours.
I guess now would be a good time to explain the concept of a pension. It is kind of like Korean version of a bed and breakfast. Many groups rent out a room at the pension for membership training (MT). They are a little bigger than a hotel, but offer fewer services and amenities.
There is a HUGE patio outside where you can take in the sights. The setting is very clean, modern, and bright! It is such a great place to stop and admire the nature outside.
bingsu and honey bread!
My friend and her family were quite impressed by the honey bread! In my opinion, it the bread was good, but not as good as the honey bread at Tom N Toms. The bread was very fluffy and pretty fresh.
The bingsu was pretty good, too. There was a very generous helping of pat (sweetened red beans), which is my friend's favorite part of a patbingsu. There was also a HUGE scoop of vanilla ice cream, almonds, cashews, cereal, a ton of dduk (rice cake), and fruit (pineapple, kiwi, banana, and strawberries). It was not a very sweet bingsu, but was definitely refreshing.
It has been featured in many dramas including KBS 세상 어디에도 없는 착한남자 (Nice Guy/Innocent Man), which starred Song Joong Ki and Park Si Yeon, and the MBC Drama 애정만만세 (Hooray for Love), which starred Lee Bo Young and Lee Tae Sung.
There is a small gift shop attached to the pension/cafe. There, you can find many Ganghwa specialty items, fair trade items, fashion accessories, and home decor items.
The view at sunset is gorgeous!
