[Japan - Osaka] A la Campagne - Tart Cafe in Umeda

On one of my first weekends in Japan, I went to A La Campagne, a Osaka/Kobe cafe famous for tartes and cakes.


My first weekend in Kobe, Japan, I went to Osaka to meet one of my best friends. It had been three years since we last saw each other, but it felt like just yesterday. We went to a tart cafe she knew and really enjoys.

Actually, we tried to go to about six other cafes, but, since this was in Umeda on a Saturday afternoon, there was a very slim chance of finding any open chairs.

We finally found chairs A La Campagne with minimal waiting time. We were maybe 8th in line and waited about 30 minutes.

While we were waiting, I took a look at the bakery case full of flavor options. Sorry, but they don't let you take a picture of the bakery case contents, but believe me there were probably about 15 options. The flavors were written in Japanese and French.

We opted for the number 1 and number 2 most popular tarts. We got the fruit tart (578 Yen) and the chocolate chestnut tart (525 Yen). They were both delicious. I ordered a coffee and my friend ordered a latte. Coming from Korea, I was quite pleased with the flavor of the coffee here. I am so happy to be back in a country that knows coffee. The tarts were not overly sweet, as I had feared. The chestnut tart was a bit too rich for my taste, but it was still quite nice. The crust of the tart was also still flaky and not soggy, as sometimes happens if it has been sitting around a while.

We were quite lucky with the location of the table, too. It was kind of off to the side in the back, right by the doors that opened onto the terrace, so it was a little quieter. The atmosphere is very bright and quaint.

They also sell some merchandise if you would want to buy it. They have coffee mugs, tote bags, jams, and cookies. You can also buy a whole tart, rather than just by the slice. The whole tarts are around 5500Yen, I believe.

I am sorry, but I think I cannot give you proper directions to the Umeda branch since I am very bad at directions and this was my first time in Umeda.

The Kobe branch (I believe this is the original store) is pretty easy to find. If you go out of the Hankyu Sannomiya Station, go out the West Exit to Tor Road. Go right and then in about 100m you will see the store on your right. Otherwise, if you take the subway to Sannomiya, take the W1 exit and then it will be on your left upon exiting.

If you go, let me know what flavors you tried! I am very curious about some of the other fruits, especially the fig flavor.
