It was a welcome warm stop to refuel.
I didn't think through fully that we might want to stop off for brunch after the exhibition...like, I thought about it, but then never fully executed the thought.
I first visited Cookshop a few years ago for brunch and really enjoyed it, so I've been meaning to come back.
If you're coming for brunch, make sure you MAKE A RESERVATION, otherwise be prepared to wait. Since I didn't make a reservation, we had to wait about 30 minutes, which actually wasn't that bad.
The menu changes daily, but this is what was offered the day we went. The brunch menu is pretty standard, but some of the produce components may change.
We wanted some soup to warm up, so we went for the Roasted Mushroom Soup as a starter. The waiter asked us if we were planning to share because they'd split the soup for us in the kitchen, which was super gracious of him to offer. So, we got it split...and actually only wanted the soup split, but the whole meal ended up being split...more on that later, so the presentation may be a bit off, but the flavors are all there.
This soup was quite flavorful, actually, and wasn't too salty and it didn't taste too earthy. You know how sometimes mushroom soups can taste really foresty? Well, this one was pretty well-balanced and the perfect starter for a cold wintry day. It wasn't too hearty and wasn't too lean.
We also got the Warm Goat Cheese. This was actually quite a hefty portion of cheese, but it was so good. At first we only got 2 small pieces of toast, but we asked for more and they brought some out. The salad was really nice, too. The vinaigrette was nice and fresh and ever so slightly fruity.
This is when the split thing was a little sad. We did not necessarily want to share the entrees 50/50...by that I mean, I didn't...because I'm not a huge fan of eggs.
This is the Huevos Rancheros. We kind of had food envy while we were waiting by the bar...almost everyone and their mother had this. So, I don't really like eggs, so I ate around it, but this is a beast of a dish. We couldn't finish it. There's a ton of black beans and 3 eggs...and the cream and the sauce...it's just a lot. If you're looking for something hearty that will stick to your ribs, this is it. It was flavorful enough, but I think I was just not that into it, personally, because I loved my French toast so much!
We also got a couple of the brunch cocktails.
To the left is the Winter Wassail (HOT), which is obviously seasonal, and to the right is the BLT Mary, which I believe is available year-round for brunch.
Both were super good! The Wassail was a great drink to have to warm up and it was a very festive, cozy drink.
I was a little skeptical of the BLT Mary at first, but I quickly warmed up to it. The vodka is bacon-infused, so I was worried it may be a bit greasy, but it wasn't. It was executed well. The BLT Mary does have an actual lettuce leaf in the drink and a thick strip of bacon.
If you're looking for a unique brunch drink, I'd recommend checking out the BLT Mary.
